Loades explores England's religious cultures during the reign of Mary Tudor. He investigates how conflicting traditions of conformity and dissent negotiated the new spiritual, political and legal landscape which followed her reintroduction of Catholicism to England. The clergy and laity were largely acquiescent. Loades investigates religious practices in the high church and the parishes to give us a richer understanding of this habit of obedience.

The most recent publication by David Loades is for The National Archives entitled Mary Tudor: The Tragical History of the First Queen of England (see picture of front cover above). This volume has received a excellent review from Professor Diarmaid MacCullough, University of Oxford, in the London Review of Books.

The National Archives describes the book as "a compelling narrative exploring the drama of Mary's life from her parents' marriage to the aftermath of her reign. He shows how the times she lived in were as unpredictable as the events of her own life from disfavour and despair to the crown and late marriage to Philip of Spain. Original documents and colour illustrations bring Mary out of the shadows, revealing both the steeliness and the vulnerability of the woman and the queen".

David Loades has already published volumes on Henry VIII (see front cover above) and Elizabeth I for the National Archives. He has also published a major biography of Elizabeth I (see front cover above) with Hambldon Continuum.

David Loades is both editor and a contributor to a distinguished collection of essays Word and Worship, published by The Davenant Press - please visit:
